243 - Lamentation

December 25, 2001

The sudden and accidental deaths of relatives of two acquaintances last week and the death after a long illness of another women I had met and admired left shadows over these days just past. How do people find the strength to continue after such blows? Even in my distance from these sorrows, I find myself searching for answers.

Two Hundred Forty-Three

Lamentation

As a forest consumed by fire, I am laid low,
Altered, blackened by this death;
Broken branches scrape the horizon,
Broken dreams tear the future from my vision.

If I come to You for solace, Holy One,
I must strip away my accusation;
You record this fate, but do not will it,
Your hand did not strike the fatal blow.

Beneath the ash, within the bleak landscape
Of my sorrow, I search for comfort;
Renew me in memory, heal me with time
Though each day seems endless as my tears.

Let my world recover from devastation,
As Your healing touch reveals new growth;
Capture the essence of my recollections
To nurture my altered survival.
