237 - On the Home Front

November 5, 2001

A new type of time reckoning has become evident in our conversations and in the media. Everything seems to be coded as "before" or "after" the Attacks of September 11. 9/11 is shorthand for disaster as well as the number we call when disaster strikes. While the battle escalates in Afghanistan, we are bombarded with news reports of the high state of alert imposed on all of us at home.

Two Hundred Thirty-Seven

On the Home Front

We wander in our time of uncertainty.
Holy One, You shield us when we call You,
Refocusing our hearts to normalcy,
Releasing us from unnamed fears.

We try not to cower at shadows,
Daily duties reduced to suspicion;
Direct us to reality, the truth substance
That scorns rumor and sensation.

Direct us to the stockpiling of faith,
For this is the source of our security;
Let our actions honor community caring,
Unite us in calm resolve.
