168 - Erev Rosh Hashanah

September 24, 1998

For the past three years, it's been my honor, as Resident Psalmist at Beth Emet The Free Synagogue, to compose new psalms for the High Holy Days. What a thrill to hear Rabbi Peter Knobel or Rabbi Eleanor Smith read my words to open worship those evenings. I am humbled as I listen; I am grateful to continue to reach such moments.

Erev Rosh Hashanah

Start us anew, Beloved Friend,
Begin us again, refresh us;
Restore to us a just born joy,
Our first breath, Your soul touch.

Head the year with our gladness,
Our vigor, our youth,
Our strength of endeavor:
Clasping hands.

Our mouths fill with praise:
Your starting song,
Our own beginnings,
The yearís quick pulse.

Our souls fill with praise:
Your starting song,
Our synchrony,
Our return.
